Mounjaro Prescriptions for Weight Loss – NHS Eligibility Update

Soon, GPs will be able to prescribe Mounjaro for weight loss in a limited group of eligible patients.

NHS England has estimated that approximately 220,000 patients across primary care and specialist weight management services will qualify. Based on this, within our practice population of 6,000 patients, approximately 15–20 individuals are expected to meet the criteria — and some may already be using Mounjaro.

Due to limited resources in general practice, we kindly ask patients not to contact the practice to request Mounjaro unless they meet the eligibility criteria. Unfortunately, we are not able to prescribe this medication on the NHS outside the specified guidance.

Eligibility Criteria (Cohort 1 – from end of June 2025):

To qualify for Mounjaro on the NHS, you must have:

  • A BMI over 40, and

  • At least four of the following five conditions:

    1. Hypertension (diagnosed)

    2. Sleep apnoea (diagnosed)

    3. Type 2 diabetes (diagnosed)

    4. Cardiovascular disease (diagnosed)

    5. Hypercholesterolaemia (diagnosed)

If you do not meet these criteria, we are unable to prescribe Mounjaro, as per current NHS guidelines.

We appreciate your understanding and support in helping us manage our services effectively.
